Popcorn and Politics | About | Presentation | API

Popcorn & Politics is a data visualization of movies, their audience and their impact on the 2008 US Presidential race. Movie producers use their personal fortunes to donate money to political campaigns. Their fortunes are fueled by ticket sales. In this visualization, you can see the connection from movies to candidates and the donation amounts made by the producers.
We used a simple design visualization, applying design strategies from Edward Tufte. We wanted a clean, simple design that would allow the data to tell the story. We also applied a Sankey Diagram, because it combined the use of volume and network connections which is what we needed to show.

The database is compiled with information from Wikipedia, IMDB, Film-releases.com, the NYTimes API and the FEC. A database was built out that contains movies, their producers, the donation amounts from the producers, and the US presidential candidates they contributed towards.
